review 1: While I deeply and sincerely enjoyed the murder mystery aspects of it, the victim popping in at the end of every chapter with sarcasm and hate was welcome relief at times and the great historical detail that showed a depth of research that so many authors lack made the history lover in me squeal in delight. The only thing I truly disliked was the way that Barbara was treated by her husband. Again, the history buff side of me knows that what took place in those days was depicted accurately enough, but at times i wanted to shake Barbara and to tell her to fight for herself. To not just follow the limits set by Alfonso, but to set her own limits for him. Overall, a very good book, but one that left a bitter taste in my mouth (no pun intended, Lucrezia.)
review 2:
... moreThis was a delightful surprise. This debut novel was inspired by a Robert Browning poem and is based on real characters and events. The book takes place in 16th century France when the Duke of Ferrara marries Barbara of Austria. It was rumored that he murdered his first wife, who died mysteriously. The story is based on Barbara's inquiry into what really happened to the first wife and her relationship with her husband, and the many members of her new home. And, the author uses a unique literary style to include the perspective of the dead first wife. Excellent character development, great period details (the author clearly did her research)and an intriguing plot. This is one of those books that you can't put down. An excellent historical mystery. I look forward to the author's next book. less
