review 1: Though oddly written in the style of Iris Johansen, Death Echo submerges readers into the world of smuggling. Emma Cross, a former CIA agent now working for a private company called St. Kilda (which readers will recognize from other of Lowell's works), has for the past year been simply investigating a series of uber-expensive yacht thefts. Now, the twin of one of those yachts is suspected of carrying something dangerous enough to kill tens of thousands. Unfortunately for Emma, there are complications--a lot of them. For one thing, just what the Black Swan is carrying is unknown. The greater problem is that she and her newly-recruited captain/partner, Mac, have less than a week to establish the problem and take care of the Black Swan. Though a new tack for Lowell, fans ... moreshould be able to adjust to the lack of artsy sidebars. Fans of Iris Johansen, on the other hand, should be thrilled.
review 2: Emma Cross left the CIA and joined St. Kilda's, an elite security consulting firm, thinking that she would have a chance to escape from the arduous and often unpleasant life of the CIA. When she is investigating the theft of a yacht, she soon discovers that life is not going to be so easy for her after all when the case becomes of interest to the CIA, the FBI and both Russian and Georgian interests. When it becomes apparent that there are two look-alike yachts, Blackbird and Black Swan, involved in the mystery, she runs into the interim captain of Blackbird, Mackenzie Durand, and recruits him to join St. Kilda's to help with the search. The aparks soon fly between Emma and "Mac". This is an interesting and exciting suspense novel. less
