review 1: This novel fell woefully short of my expectations. Considering it was written by a Wellesley College alumna, the local color was rather weak. I was a freshman at MIT when I attended the longest ever production of Othello ever at Shakespeare House. Desdemona was smoking hot so it was not a total loss. Later that semester a friend and I were invited to a Shakespeare Society party (of sorts) by a high school friend of his who specialized in playing male roles in the productions. It was incredibly lame. Nobody told us that we were expected to wear suits, so we were initially greeted at the door as likely party crashers. A few years later I dated a Wellesley woman who lived in Munger (next to Pomerey/Casenov/Beebe quad). I went to the St Patrick's Day party at Munger ... morewith a half dozen friends from our floor at Burton House (Burton 4 aka the Burton 4-players ). One of the guys thought the party was so sad that he departed by through a floor to ceiling window in the Munger common room because it was the fastest way out. Later on another friend of mine at Burton House didn't answer his MIT "dorm-line" phone for two weeks because he heard that one of my girlfriend's friends who we called "Amy Moose" was going to ask him to come to the Munger Spring formal. On the bright side, the film society had a cool all night marathon where we saw North by Northwest and Viva Las Vegas. And they had Pousette Dart Band play live outside for Spring Fling. There were two punk rock bands on my floor and some guys who half heartedly were talking about forming a third. They wanted my girlfriend to be lead vocalist. They gave her the lyrics to a song they had just written and she announced that she would not even read the said lyrics aloud much less sing them.
review 2: I think I would actually give this one 2.5 stars, if possible. It was sort of all over the place, and tried to keep too many quirky character and significant subplot balls in the air at the same time. That said, I enjoyed the main character and many of the conceits of the story, including her photographic memory, Kennedy-infatuated father, and underground Shakespeare club membership. It just needed more connecting threads and more editing, I think. less
