review 1: I'm only on pg. 82 and this is not what I was expecting. I really don't like the main character, Isa...she lets all these people in her life push her around and abuse her and now all of a sudden she's doling out her own abuse. Why the heck wasn't she smacking Greer!!! Her personality traits are totally contradictory. She seems to have some misplaced anger issues. She really pisses me off! I'm only into the book a short ways and already I see several lines that are shockingly similar to another popular book series. I don't know if I can bring myself to finish this. I'm so turned off...not one encounter between the main characters was remotely steamy. The repetitiveness of the character's thoughts in the first few chapters was tedious. I wanted to like this book but it just... more ended up making me angry enough to write a negative review. This will probably go on my dnf shelf. On a positive note, the artwork is gorgeous! Joey Hill writes D/s so much better and with so much depth and sensitivity. Hill handles her characters' past trauma with maturity and respect. I'm not usually one to compare authors but the difference is like night and day.Update...just finished it. While I'm not quite as miffed as when I wrote the above comments, I just really don't get this pairing. It did absolutely nothing for me. The only time I really connected with the characters was when Isa's art was involved. The supporting characters were so thin and completely underdeveloped. Not my favorite book by far but I could see the potential in the storyline.
review 2: This is a FSOG inspired fanfic turned novel. Yes, there is a twist, and it's makes it interesting. But from the way the author writes, it's apparent that the author isn't in the lifestyle. Repeat after me:Safe, Sane, Consensual. It's really important. If Dylan has really been a Dom for so long, it would have been important to him to at least explain some things with Isa before he started. If not the first time, then at least before the second, third time. If you can ignore the BDSM aspect of the whole book, then the story is okay. I like the characters enough to make it through the book, and want to read their HEA. less
