review 1: If you love language, this beautifully illustrated collection of untranslatable words from other cultures is right up your alley. Entries range from the ridiculous (Poronkusema: Finnish for the distance a reindeer can comfortably travel before taking a break) to the descriptive (Komorebi: Japanese for the sunlight that filters through the leaves of the trees) to the familiar feeling ('Akihi: Hawaiian for listening to directions and then walking off forgetting them) to the awww-inducing (Naz: Urdu for the assurance that comes from knowing you are loved unconditionally). Could have been improved by providing a pronunciation key to enable readers like me to work them into conversations and impress/annoy others.
review 2: This book is amazing. I knew as soon as I
... more read about Lost in Translation that I wanted it, and the book did not disappoint! Who knew there was a single word for "a smile that is sarcastic or mocking" (glas wen, in Welsh)? Or for "the excess weight we can gain from emotional overeating (kummerspeck, in German)? My only complaint is that I was left wanting more! Highly recommended, especially for people who love words. less
