review 1: Not crazy about this book. I could not get past the presence of tomatoes and potatoes in 1498 in Venice - totally preposterous. Also, the presence of large numbers of books in the home of one of the characters who had spent his life as a chef - also preposterous due to the extremely high cost of said books at that time. Another chef voices opinions on religion and God more likely to be heard in 21st century east coast and west coast salons. Just a really historically inaccurate (the author actually mentions some of the things she changed from history in her afterwords!) novel. Not my cup of tea.Other than that, the story itself was mildly interesting.
review 2: A beautiful, luscious book about a chef's apprentice in late 15th century Venice who learns not only
... morethe art of cooking but also the emerging, secret knowledge of the humanists from his Maestro. The end papers are as luscious as the descriptions of the fabulous meals the Maestro creates, but what the apprentice learns about knowledge and life and love is the true gusto of this beautiful written novel. less
