review 1: Too much going on. I got the book because it was a recommended read for those who love Shadow of the Wind. I can see the comparison in regards to genre (historical fiction set in Europe with a mystery pertaining to books), but this story was too clunky. I didn't care about the characters and cringed every time the narrator did something stupid because his street urchin friend suggested it. Too much to read and not enough time to read something it don't love, so this one got the boot.
review 2: A wonderfully told tale of religious strife and the intrigues of the Italian nobility. I am most reminded of the novel The Name of the Rose, which dealt with a whole library of books at a monastery, and is more of a murder mystery as the main character tries to solve the
... moremystery of who the perp is. THIS novel is not set in a monastery, but it is set in similar times. A young street urchin is plucked from the streets of Venice and becomes an apprentice to a master chef. We learn a bit about cooking while he learns about the intrigues over a mysterious book that is variously believed to have: the formula for turning lead into gold, a love potion, a map to buried treasure, or secret gospels that might overturn the authority of Rome. Bravo, well done, is my response to the novel and to the lively menus created by the master chef. less
