review 1: Okay...I had read "The Hot Kid" and stumbled upon "Up In Honey's Room." Those are the full-length novels by Elmore Leonard that center around Carlos/Carl Webster. I read "The Hot Kid" years ago so did not feel too badly about one of those chapters being printed in this book to remind me about specific details of Carl Webster and his family. They are all interesting characters. I was happy to read "Comfort to the Enemy" because I had not read the serialized version (someone else mentioned this in their review and that it was published in a newspaper). Since Mr. Leonard has recently died, I wanted to pick something up of his. I also sent a copy to my brother who first shared Elmore Leonard books with me.We both liked the review of WW2 era issues that show just how hard it wa... mores to deal with war rations, whether to be kind or hate neighbors due to their ethnicity, etc.
review 2: Two short stories and a novella. Carl Webster is a Deputy United States Marshal who we see in the first story — subtitled: How Carlos Webster changed his name to Carl and became a famous Oklahoma lawman — as a teenager in 1921. In the novella, Webster is twenty years older and has returned from a stint in the navy to take up his old job with the marshal’s service where he is given the assignment of investigating the murder of a German POW at a prison camp in Oklahoma. As the cover blurb says: “...vintage Leonard.” I’m pretty sure I read an earlier novel, THE HOT KID, about the younger Webster. less

Leonard is a master of dialogue. His characters are much more interesting than the plot.

Didn't really like the open-ended ending, but it's a good read nonetheless.
