review 1: I had a fever when I read this book...I obviously wasn't feeling well, so I needed something light and easy. It was blandly sweet, so it fit the bill at the time. Each chapter focuses on a different child who has come to live at Oddfellow's Orphanage -- we learn his or her backstory as well as personal characteristics. The book as a whole takes the reader through a year at the orphanage, so we see the children and their caretakers celebrating different seasons and holidays. My favorite was hair-cutting day, which takes place on the first day of summer, and again on the first day of winter. This struck me as a great way to handle hair maintenance -- twice a year is doable for even lazy people like me. Plus you don't really need to get your hair cut more than twice a y... moreear, as long as you get it cut short enough. But I digress. Sweet illustrations add to the cozy feeling of the book...and "cozy" is probably the one word I'd use to describe this book as a whole. It's not earth-shattering, and it's not great literature...but it will probably make you feel better if your brain feels like it's going to explode out of your face.
review 2: I was really disappointed with this book. I became interested after falling in love with some of the author's paintings in her Etsy store. And while the illustrations are charming, there is not much else to this little book about a variety of orphans and the orphanage where they live. Martin seems to be aiming for quirky and sweet but her writing is just plain dull. Each chapter is disconnected from the next and they never come together. It seems like Martin has a creative mind and ideas but it really is better translated into art than words for her. less
