review 1: This third book in Emma Hart's The Game Series, All the Right Moves, had the most heart and character development so far. Abbi is Hart's most believable character yet. Dealing with depression and haunted by her past, she has a dream of attending Juilliard. Her mental instability had it's ups and downs, much like real life. I felt like I had a window into clinical depression through her. Hart finally gave up trying to write all American characters and added a British man as the second protagonist. She got to have discussions about the differences in the vernacular. In Blake we find her first polite (non-caveman) male. Raised with manners and money, he bucks family expectations to be a chef and dancer in Brooklyn. Fair WARNING, this story contains a lot of triggers that I wi... moresh had been stated up front: CUTTING, SUICIDE, RAPE, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, DRUGS, and more. I loved that the purpose of this book wasn't for the main characters to fall in love or have sex. It was a journey from within and without, exploring the battle to deal with mental health every day. It was borderline literary! Definitely Contemporary New Adult as opposed to her others which are closer to Adult Romance. If you want an introduction to Emma Hart, start with All the Right Moves! 4 out of 5 stars!
review 2: This installment of The Game series has characters of Maddie and Braden from the first book visit a couple of times, but it had a completely different feel to it than the other two books in the series. I would have preferred we stayed at Berkeley with the group we have already met, quite honestly. Instead the book takes place in Brooklyn and Manhattan in NY.This book is about Maddie's best friend who is also the girl her brother nearly destroyed. Abbi is trying to piece her life back together after nearly succeeding in taking her own life. After spending a year in a mental institution, she is back home and living with her parents and reclaiming her love of ballet. It is through ballet that Abbi feels alive and feels hope and sees a future. Until Blake, her new dance partner walks in. Blake stirs feelings she never thought she would feel again and causes her to feel hope in more than dancing. We spent a lot of time in Abbi's head, hearing about how she was struggling to keep ahold of her normal, of the swirling panic always on the fringes. Blake's sister had also suffered from depression, but she succeeded at taking her life and Blake is in NY from England to fulfill the dream he dreamt to be a dancer with his sister. He sees the same things in Abbi he saw in his sister and is determined to not walk away or let it be this time. I kind of felt it became repetitive after awhile, I guess I got a little bored. The book seemed to infer that Blake is what caused her to finally heal? It seemed she was still a mess, trying to figure things out and then all of a sudden all better or something. I don't know, I felt like I missed a chapter or two.It really was an emotional and often beautifully written, but I feel a lot was missing; it didn't feel like their complete story at all. I also felt like The story seemed familiar, the cutting, the near suicide, and the depression. Not sure how many ways you can spin all of that, so it's probably why it felt familiar.I don't know, I felt the story had promise and potential, but lost its way and kind of petered out. It also seemed like all of the characters spoke with British colloquialisms even though Blake was our Brit in the story. I liked that he was British, I just would have preferred more of a distinction in characters dialog in light of Blake and Abbi teasing each other about how they talk. I am missing what the game is in this installment, it seemed too serious to fit the theme of the series, I guess. On to the next book in the series. less
