review 1: I had very high expectations when I picked up this book (any fan of "The Nanny Diaries" I am sure had high expectations lol) but honestly it just wasn't what I was expecting at all. Maybe it is just me, but I never saw Nanny as the type to question whether or not she wanted children. It could just be the close relationship between her and Grayer in the first book that made me feel that way but either way it did surprise me, especially since it took up the whole book. And I also didn't understand why they wanted to buy such a horrible fixer upper instead of a comfortable, move in ready home/condo (they both came from money afterall). What I did like about this book was that we were able to get more of a picture of Mr. X. However, we really didn't get a better picture of Har... morevard Hottie. There was also just too much going on with this book and I felt that it started out slow, the middle was getting better and then the ending just felt like a quick wrap up that left me confused on a lot of things. I really think they could have taken it in a completely different direction and made it another amazing book, but with this book I am just not sure what they were trying to do. I don't recommend this book, but if you are dying to know what happens with Grayer and Nanny (and some other minor characters) then pick up a copy, but I can't say that it will be pleasant. And again with the names: Stilton? Carter (it took me awhile to realize they were talking about a woman and not a man)? And I wish they would have brought back Ms. Chicago. That would have been fun... Maybe even Charlotte (Mr. X's first wife) too... Oh, there was so much they could have done! ~~~Spoilers Below~~~ Some things just didn't match up with the character personalities... Like why would Mrs. X (who doesn't bother to parent or even love her children) chose to parent a child that wasn't even blood related to her or Mr. X? She seems to be fond of Stilton which doesn't make any sense for her personality. Also I don't understand why she would give up custody of her children to Mr. X? She seems like the type that would want to keep the children for child support. Also supposedly she dug up the nanny cam video in case she needed it in a custody hearing... So again, why would she just let her kids go off to live with their father if she was gearing up for a fight? Also from the first book it made Mrs. X sound like she was willing to do whatever she had to do to save her marriage so I was thrown off when they made her not really care about Mr. X and Carter(and her status as a married woman in high society). In the first book divorce was what all her anxieties were about (all the divorces happening with Grayer's playmate's parents and even some of her friends within the high society). And I really didn't like the whole Con Artist thing that they pinned to Mr. X. They didn't even mention it until the very end and gave us no information as to what/how/when/why. I think they should have just left him as a wealthy business man and played around that because nothing of the con artist issue made any sense at all. They could have developed Grayer's character a little more.He just goes from drunk/high to caring older brother to average teenager and back to drunk/high... It was just confusing to understand what he wanted from Nanny and why he sought her out after so many years. The adoption idea was the best part of the book and the fact that they didn't go through with it was disappointing. I don't feel like Grayer or Stilton were stable when the book ended. They were in a bad place in the beginning and I felt like they weren't any better off at the end. Everything came to a close so quickly that I didn't even understand what had happened. But like I said the middle was pretty good... lol
review 2: I’m happy to hear that McLaughlin and Kraus wrote a sequel to the Nanny Diaries because they left the first book with so many questions in my head. This book is about dealing-with-the-past-in-order-to-move-on-to-the-present-and-the-future theme. Nan is pressured with her career as well as having a baby but she met Grayer again in unexpected time and place. Every parent and teacher should read this book as it shows how upper and middle class society handle their children; and they blame it on someone. less
