review 1: Finally, a book from high school that didn't disappoint during my reread of it of a few years later! The Real Real was just as good as I remember it being. It would have been really easy for Jesse to become an unlikable character once she was cast on the reality show, but she was very relatable. Her relationship problems weren't overly dramatic or ridiculous, which I appreciated. Even with her new fame, Jesse still had to deal with the consequences of her actions on the show (and the consequences of some "creative" editing by the producers). She was a girl who never had anything handed to her before the show and even after the show, everything came with a heavy price tag. Sure, in the end she gets what she wants for herself and her friends, but she went through a lot to ge... moret it.My big criticism comes from the last section of the book. The premiere of the show and the following press the cast does felt rushed to me. There was a lot of drama squeezed into the end of the book when there was relatively little of it throughout the majority of the book, aside from the manufactured show drama and Jesse's friendship with Caitlyn. The pacing of the book was thrown off in the last section, even though things were wrapped up with a nice neat bow.
review 2: The Real Real is the prime example of a book that didn't need to be written. It could have been subtitled, "Confirming All You Were Pretty Sure You Knew about Reality TV" because it was so predictable. On the other hand, it was also well-written, entertaining, and completely plausible. The thing I find most alarming about this novel is its labeling as McLaughlin's and Krauss's first foray into the young adult genre. I wouldn't necessarily want my teenage daughter reading about hookups and underage drinking presented with so little judgement. Indeed, there are few real consequences to any of the characters' immoral behavior. less

enjoyed. A few too many characters, but they didn't shy away from putting the MCs through hell.

Ik vind hem vrij nep overkomen, niet iets wat ik vaker zou lezen.
