Are you one of those lucky people who scored a ticket to see J Cole perform this summer on his Australian tour?
If you are, then make sure you get to the show nice and early to catch a glimpse of one very talented young woman, Ari Lennox.
Ari Lennox is a singer/songwriter from Washington D.C. and is signed to J Cole’s very own record label, Dreamville Records.
Throughout her life, Lennox has been inspired by some of the greats, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Minnie Riperton and Whitney Houston.
In all modesty, Lennox describes her voice as “vulnerable and soulful, imperfect but pretty.”
But what really makes her voice pop is its nostalgic and classic nature, almost possessing this Natalie Cole vibe, which is particularly present on her groovy track ‘Night Drive’.
That groovy track features on her latest EP ‘Pho’ which dropped last year.
Lennox personally described her EP as, “modern, relaxed, turned up soul… it’s just chill with trappy vibes reminiscent of the beautiful music from the ‘70’s.”
The album’s title ‘Pho’ was inspired by her love for this type of food her ex introduced her to, which she describes was “so soothing and just amazing for my tastebuds.”
“I was trying to show people myself, and that you can turn heartache into something beautiful,” she said.
According to an i-D article, Lennox said she is prepping a new album which could drop anytime next year.
I have some beautiful songs I’ve been working on with my homeboy Elite, he did a lot of stuff with Cole… and now he’s just all over my debut album, and I cannot wait to release that,” she said.
