review 1: It was good. It was a quick fast read and I am happy I read it. Definitely a different take on some post apocalyptic books. The only thing that I disliked was that you didn't get to much into the characters till the end. No real emotional connection with anyone until the end which sucked. Going to finish the series then be done with them. Not going to go rave or anything about them but since they are short might be good for someone not all that into longer story's. Overall 4 stars for creativity, and attention to detail.
review 2: I enjoy the premise of this book: In the not-to-distant future, when all information is broadcast via The Network, a natural disaster strikes America, causing a domino effect that results in a tsunami, crazy hail storms and earthquak
... morees. As if this isn't bad enough, the natural disasters damage some sort of top secret chemical research lab and a dangerous compound is released into Colorado which, depending on your blood type, could turn you into a rage filled monster, cover you in blisters, or make you sterile. In a way, this is an interesting new take on the zombie genre, because while there are no zombies per se, there are rage filled humans roaming the streets ready to kill anyone they come in contact with. The story centers around two bus loads of kids, from teenagers to pre-schoolers, who take shelter in a home goods/grocery store and barricade themselves inside. Left to fend for themselves, and unable to leave, the older kids must work together to provide for themselves and the many children in their care. I thought this was one of the more original, and also realistic, versions of a Dystopian future that I've read in a long time. The only thing I didn't like about the book was the prose. Told from the point of view of Dean, a teenage boy, the writing was meant to sound like how a teenage boy would write. And while I can understand that decisions by a writer, it often read as dumbed down or goofy. I eventually got over it however, and it was a fun book that I had a hard time putting down at the end of the night. I wasn't thrilled with the ending, which seemed pretty unrealistic, but I'm still interested to see what happens next. less
