review 1: "The Twelve Rooms of the Nile" is an earthy tale of the imagined flirtation between Florence Nightingale and Gustave Flaubert. The character development is exquisite! While Enid Shomer spares no sensitivities to build out her portrayal of Mr. Flaubert as a rogue and a gentleman, it is the vulnerable interaction between him and Miss Nightingale that build so much appeal in the story. My only criticism is her usage of French so freely without the novel. I don't speak nor read French so I was at a loss of what she was writing about and it tended to distract from the joy of the novel. I think it quite rude of her, really, to use the foreign language so freely throughout the story. I wish the ending were more joyous, it left us disillusioned. But overall, the novel is a go... moreod read.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book but it took me a long time to get through. It's not a stay up all night page turner - more of a read a bit, put it down and think about it book. The whole "twelve rooms" part never played out for me - didn't understand that at all. But the fictional storyline of the friendship between Florence Nightengale and Gustave was fantastic and a nice change from romantic musings. less

There needs to be 0 stars. I wouldn't have finished it at all if it weren't for book club.

Not a good read if you're uncomfortable with graphic medical descriptions or sex.

Not my kind of book. I think it would appeal to men more than women.
