review 1: A must-read for anyone with an interest in Irish literature and culture, I found myself stopping every 5 minutes to scribble down the name of yet another author, or to find a piece of music on YouTube, which really enhanced the experience. It is a wonderfully evocative exploration of ageing, depression and alcoholism, with a protagonist who becomes increasingly real as he unravels. But don't let that put you off, for the serious reader/literature geek this book is a lot of fun.
review 2: Nostalgia in the twilight of life was one of the overarching themes of Dulbinesque; however, the most salient observation Vila-Matas made in my opinion was of the inevitability of solitude. Save for brief moments of conversation, we are lost in the interior of our mind througho... moreut most of the day. This notion was apparent in Dublinesque with the use of seemingly dispensable characters. Characters enter and leave without a modicum of fanfare. Throughout the majority of the book, Riba is left in the vast sea of his thoughts, reminiscing about his life as a publisher and musing on death. This is what will remain in my memory of Dublinesque. less
