review 1: No sé si fue la primera novela que leí de Vila-Matas, pero “París no se acaba nunca” me confirmó sin ningún género de dudas que estaba ante un escritor genial, un digámosle “escritor total” que desde entonces nunca me ha decepcionado. Su apasionante juego entre la ficción, la autoficción y la metaliteratura rebasa las características formales de la narración clásica a la vez que exige la participación consciente del lector, instándole a abandonar el despreocupado papel de simple receptor de historias.
review 2: There are some really good parts, some funny moments, but overall, the style of writing felt off with me. Don't really know why. I was laughing loud occasionally. That would count as a sign of good book. But the book as a whole was ... morenot. But maybe it shouldn't be? I am eager to read more of his stuff and want to be proved wrong of this first impression. One of the things that me off, I guess, was this over-emphasis of "honest" portrayal of himself, in all his vulnerability, his encounters with famous writers, his adoration of and wish to be Hemingway. It all could be admirable, but somehow it felt still like a pose: sort of "look how honest and vulnerable, young and naive I was back in the day". Just doesn't click. less
