review 1: +1 to INT for picking this book up. As a married geek (to another geek, thankfully), I picked this book up for the smirk factor. Eric Smith is obviously a diehard geek himself, and he sprinkles references for most mainstream (if not too many indie) fandoms; Firefly, Star Trek, Star Wars, BSG – they're all here; though as a Whovian, there aren't too many Doctor Who sprinkles on this relationship sundae.Smith admits very early on that this guide is written towards men – but geek girls can learn a thing or two, when put in the right context as you read.Having not read too many relationship books, I don't have a huge pool to compare Smith's guide to, but having a working relationship myself, a lot of these tips and scenarios are true to form – geek or not. The impor... moretance of this book is that Smith approaches what many may view as “common sense” regarding dating in a way that caters to the (stereotypically) shy, reserved, awkward geek. Yes, in a few places it is easy to become indignant (not all geeks are complete shut-ins), but by and large, Smith and his advice are approachable and kind.Long story short, in this game of love and life, sometimes we need help. Now gamers have a walkthru!
review 2: Yet another BookCon giveaway. I stumbled into this signing line unintentionally (I hadn’t incorporated it into my schedule) and decided to stick around, and I’m glad I did. The author was a sweetheart, which was all the more impressive since I was about third-from-last in a rather long line. (Note: Every author I met at BookCon was personable, though they must have all been exhausted. Are readers/writers generally more polite people? I’d like to think so.) This book covers such topics as “Select Your Character: Your Quest Begins” (determining your personality type, strengths, and weaknesses) and “Do or Do Not, There Is No Try: Asking Her Out.” Geeky references abound (I got maybe half of them, to be honest), and it’s funny. Worth checking out if you’re looking for a nerdy version of a dating manual, or if — like me — you’re looking, not for a relationship, but an entertaining read. less
