review 1: I've heard this book described as "what would happen if Ron killed Voldemort at the last minute, instead of Harry?" But really, it's more like "What would happen if Ron was prophesied to defeat Voldemort but then Harry did instead and Ron (who already felt inadequate) goes into a downward spiral, joins a cult that is suspiciously like Scientology (run by Draco and Narcissa Malfoy), and accidentally brings about the end of the world in an attempt to get back at Harry for ruining his life."Which is to say, it's quite an enjoyable romp (and more original than the description above suggests) but it wasn't quite my cup of tea. I found myself looking up from it to distract myself fairly often. I do like Claiborne's style, and the illustrations were a lovely touch--I just found O... moreliver and Ewan to both be fairly unsympathetic, and we all know how I feel about unsympathetic protagonists. Still, the plot moves quickly, the dialog is quippy and smart, there are a lot of fun surprises and it's an original take on the "chosen one" trope. If you like fresh, smart new voices and are itching for something that recalls some of the magic of Harry Potter, this is for you.
review 2: This book was excellent. The cast of characters was entirely refreshing -- the two main characters being completely different from what generally makes a main character. Oliver was strong and clever and confident and gifted -- and he was also a massive prat about it. Gosh, what an oblivious jerk. And Ewan is the sort of guy who bumbles purposelessly through life, perpetually in need of a strong hug and a good cup of hot chocolate. Their development, along with both Sophie and Archie, was sweet and believable and so satisfying. The world built was wonderfully interesting. Especially as it was explored further... uhm... abroad towards the end. And I found myself laughing out loud during the climactic ending.Would definitely recommend. less
