review 1: Erin Hart’s first book, Lake of Sorrows, induced me to start reading more mysteries. There was no way I could resist a tale that takes place in the bogs of Ireland, especially when it involves an ancient bog head with no body. When I learned she’d returned to the bogs in her most recent book. I was pleased. I did enjoy this book, however. There's plenty of mystery to keep a reader engrossed -- an ancient body and a body of a well-known acidic commentator found in the same bog at the same time, a ragtag artistic community that morphs from a one person get-away to a safe haven for artists that might not fit in elsewhere but merge with this group into a bonded family of sorts, ritualistic deaths, and a very human group of experts brought in the resolve the mystery. I was ... moredisappointed, however, when having had my curiosity about an ritualistic death that includes an ancient book of secrets titillated, Hart jumped into the now with the modern sleuths who end up dealing with strange ritual deaths attached to current victims. I wanted to get back to that ancient monk and discover more about the book of secrets known to exist but never traced. Perhaps Hart will take up this topic again and satisfy my interest.
review 2: Interesting characters mixed with several intriguing mysteries all going on simultaneously. It contains as well An intriguing lesson in illuminated manuscripts and how they were preserved and crafted. It didn't seem to matter at all that I came upon it as the fourth in the series. The book is an excellent stand alone, although it has made me want to read the others in the order they were written. less

good story but the ending left a lot of threads hanging that I would have like to seen tied up.

A great murder mystery. I had no idea who it could be until the end. Very surprising!
