review 1: For me, this book is not a consistent three stars. It has its four-star moments, where it recaptures the quality of the first four books, and there is once again some purpose to what the bears are doing (unlike in book five). The characterisation is as good as it ever was; we can see how the characters have changed during their journey, and how they have stayed the same. Then there are the two-star moments, for example, the hints that this isn't really the last book at all but the Erin Hunters have already been commissioned to write more in the series. I do understand that publishing is a business, but I do not want to be reminded of their less noble methods of making money while I'm trying to enjoy a story. It seems pretty silly too, when I think that book five was already... more starting to flag, and this sixth installment is padded out with pointless dream sequences because ideas really are running low by now. I'm also bothered by the increasing amount of laziness towards the bear perspective. When they're deciphering pictures on the wall, and Toklo is drawing a map in the ground with his claw, that is much too far-fetched - no way would a bear have concepts of 'images' of animals, or maps. Except Ujurak, of course, who has unique experiences - the authors have the means to help the bears understand human concepts if absolutely necessary, but they don't use it.I was moved by the ending, as I have invested in these characters a lot. I really liked the first four books of the series, and I did like the final two, though the story dropped off significantly at that point. It could all have been tied up neatly in five books, and brilliant books at that, if just a little more care and thought had gone into keeping the bear perspective as real as possible.
review 2: I kind of slowed down on the fifth book, and I think that effected me about reading this. I am kind of saying that I started to go downhill with the series. 1-4 and the beginning of 5 was good. Then I started to stop reading it, then I got back to it. When I stared it again, I felt bored, like the same thing kept happening. Like okay, we save some of the wild, then we travel to a different place, and Ujurak (almost misspelled his name lol) will read the signs so we know where the heck to go, and then Toklo will call the way Ujurak reads the sighs bee-brained or something, etc. That's what I felt like kept happening. Then with this book, I got soooo annoyed with the fact that some other white bear was trying to "make Kallik like him" (I don't know about you, but I'm Ujurak x Kallik and Lusa x Toklo fan-girl lolz xD). Plus she didn't even CARE. And then she like "felt something for him". She also had Kissimi with her, which made things even harder. Eventually, She gives Kissimi back. BUT, freaking Yakone ( white bear that tryed to get with her) wants to join them and ALL of them let him. But before that happened, Ujurak DIED, and I got so angry/sad. And now that Ujuark's gone, Yakone is probally going to get with Kallik. My friend is letting me read Island of Shadows ( YES she has it and it's hardback! ;D), and by far, this is probally not going to be pretty. Apparently, one, yes just ONE, of the bears is hiding a secret. And from what I know, it's probably going to be stupid Yakone. YAKONE makes me want to jump in the book and make him go into the sky or ice with Nisa ( Kallik and Taqqiq's mother).Honestly, I really didn't care for the books that much (except for 1-4 & start of 5), only because of how things just started getting boring, annoying, heartbreaking, etc. I don't know. I just didn't have a feel for this book. I don't really have anything else to say, other than I really want Yakone to die. Looks like this book wasn't enough to make my favorites list. Well, this is my longest (the only real long one) review, and I am proud of myself. Thank you for taking the time to hear me rant & rave about this book. And thanks for letting me read your book Taylor! ;D less
