review 1: I had a lot of fun reading this book, the first in a series told from the viewpoint of dogs. I felt that the author put a nice spin on things by ensuring that the names of human objects were from a dog's viewpoint: cars were "loudcages", humans were "longpaws", etc. In addition, there were several instances of dog lore, such as how thunder was the sound of the Sun-Dog barking at Lightning when Lightning would chase the Sky-Dog. While the book is meant for a younger audience (ages 8-12, I believe), it was not really a childish style of writing, thankfully.
review 2: I don't like leaving bad reviews because I know there is a real person with real emotions who put in their time and energy. I do however feel the need to express my points of displeasure for this... more book.I wanted to like this, but that won't happen. 50 pages read is enough to tell that. I love the apocalypse theme and anthromorphism idea, but not overly repetitive terminology.Told from the view of a dog. It read a lot like folklore for juveniles. Loud cages (vehicles), trap houses (animal shelters/pounds), big growl (earth quake?), and long paws (humans) were abundantly used terms.The names were very unoriginal and not unique. My five year old did better than that for our kittens (pronounced as spelled) Haana and Seena for females and Zerna for the male. Human names would have been fine for this. There was already anthromorphism present, so why not give them the knowledge of human terms.I may try again, but only if my library gets the audio edition so I can give it half a mind while completing other tasks and not feel as though I am not completely wasting my time. less
