review 1: After receiving my reading list for next year I worked through it, looking at what I needed to buy and what is public domain, when I came across this short story online. I thought it would be a nice quick story to start of my reading with for next semester and I have to say, although it was easy enough to read, and I'm sure once I'm studying it I will get a lot more out of it, I just found it a little too choppy. The writing style is simple but the plot was a little confused. Lots happened in a very short space of time and I almost wish it was longer.
review 2: An Indian woman is having a difficult childbirth, Nick's father, a white doctor, is helping her deliver her baby. The woman's husband couldn't bear his wife's suffering and decides to slit his own throat
... more--"'Why did he kill himself, Daddy?'"'I don't know, Nick. He couldn't stand things, I guess.'"'Do many men kill themselves, Daddy?'"'Not very many, Nick.'"..."'Is dying hard, Daddy?'"'No, I think it's pretty easy, Nick. It all depends.'"They were seated in the boat, Nick in the stern, his father rowing. The sun was coming up over the hills. A bass jumped, making a circle in the water. Nick trailed his hand in the water. It felt warm in the sharp chill of the morning."In the early morning on the lake sitting in the stern of the boat with his father rowing, he felt quite sure that he would never die." less
