review 1: It took me _forever_ to finish this. I don't know what to say. I thought I might find it interesting, having lived in Poland for a year, but no. The characters were all terrible people, but in a boring way. The jumping around in the timeline was jarring and it always took a while to remember who the author was talking about in any given section because it's not obvious and nothing that's going on is sufficiently interesting for you to remember yourself. I think you have to either be German or from a certain era for this book to resonate with you? It has a pile of 5 star reviews, so it must resonate with someone. It just didn't work for me at all. I'm so happy to be finished it!

Není v tom mém čtení nostalgie po starých časech, ale zajímá mě, jak tu hnusnou dobu vnímali jiní a jak moc to odpovídá mým zkušenostem a mým vzpomínkám. Tahle kniha je toho plná. Mé poznatky a vzpomínky na hnusné časy jsou s touhle knihou hodně podobné. less

I could not get interested in this book. I put it down after about 50 pages.
