review 1: Well written, but I skimmed it anyway, because I couldn't identify with the child or the dogs. Was written from the child's focal point, and perhaps because feral children usually turn out to be hoaxes or, if not, the feral child usually starts out severely handicapped (mentally or otherwise) - whereas this child, Romochka, seemed to have all his wits about him - it lacked credibility with me. Certainly the author seemed to do a good job imagining what such a child-dog family would be like. So, despite being well-written, I cannot, as a rule, give more than 2-stars to anything that I had to skim through, rather than actually read through. (P.S. I love animals and dogs, and perhaps if the focal point had been the dogs' [Mamochka's or one of her cubs'] I'd have given a diffe... morerent rating).
review 2: If you're looking for a happy fuzzy story about a boy and some dogs, this is not it. The book is gritty and raw and transports you to a world that is so harsh that life spent in a dark and ruined basement with a stray dog pack seems almost idyllic. I wasn't sure how I felt at the end of it, besides a lot more knowledgeable about the daily habits of canines, and a little sad to think about how the backbone of the story was based on fact. less

Dogs are such clever animals and at times much more ehmpathic than humans.
