Repairman Jack
review 1: I enjoyed the book - I like Wilson's writing style and always enjoy the character of Jack - but this felt ultimately unsatisfying, especially as a conclusion to the series. I know that Nightworld is the last book in The Secret History, and that in the revised version Jack plays a larger part, but this is the last standalone Repairman Jack novel, and as such it should have felt more... finished, I guess. Or at least refer to long-time characters (Gia and Vickie - barely in it, Abe - one scene) more than in passing. I was also frustrated by the continual references to recent 'young Jack' stories, which I haven't read and which felt like it rewarded newer readers over long-time ones.I re-read all the Secret History novels as a project over the last year or so, and I'll be fin... moreishing with Nightworld soon, but Jack has always been my favorite (sorry Glaecken) player in that universe. His was the story I really cared about, and I really wanted something special out of his last standalone novel. Call it the bugbear of high expectations, but I just didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped. Not really a review, more of a whine, I guess. Maybe Nightworld will bring it all together for me and I won't end up being as disappointed.
review 2: Supposedly the finale (15th) Repairman Jack series, but I did not see things resolved, even after a gratuitous foreword by author F. Paul Wilson. Seems like I will have to read the "updated" version of Nightworld, where Jack's role was significantly increased. Dawn Pickering is searching for her supposedly deceased baby, tracking the monstrosity to a home on the East End of Long Island. Meanwhile Jack finally persuades Glaeken and the Lady to allow him to take the fight to Rasalom, buying an unparalled arsenal from Abe, which almost works. less
