Repairman Jack: The Early Years
review 1: Another massively competent thriller by F Paul Wilson and the final, until further notice, in the Repairman Jack series. The last in the middle trilogy of prequels, following the early Jack novels. I guess the only criticism of these books is that the trilogy is essentilly one long book, but you'd have to be have living under a rock not to know that, and it seems unlikely that you'd be buying this book if you weren't already aware if the structure. As I said - utterly competent, closely plotted and interesting throughout. A recommended read.
review 2: This was a good conclusion to the trilogy and gave us a few interesting bits of insight into Jack's origin. There were only two things preventing it from getting five stars.First, the fact that this is part of what
... moreI call a "secret trilogy" -- three books that are not even somewhat whole in themselves being marketed as separate titles without any indication on the cover that they aren't stand-alone titles. I really dislike that.Second, there's nothing wrong with a novel that's built around real-world events as this one is. What I dislike is that the novel is set in the 1990s, but there are several instances of foreshadowing of 9/11. It felt gratuitous to me and pulled me out of the narrative.Other than that, the trilogy was a fun read. Just know going into it that you're setting yourself up to read three books before things are resolved and you'll be fine. less
