review 1: Another good romp with the British racing world, and Dick Francis' son seems to have the same knack as dad for keeping it real- and providing just enough helpful details about the racing world for the uninformed reader, without dragging down the pace. While I didn't admire this particular protagonist as much as some of Dick Francis' most memorable heroes, he was still a sympathetic character who manages to solve the mystery and save his own life in the end!
review 2: I had just about decided to not read any more books by Felix Francis. I was a hug evan of his esteemed father, Dick Francis. A tough act to follow. But I was pleasantly surprised by *Bloodline*. Francis' tale follows race caller and TV commentator Mark Shillingford as he tries to unravel a series
... moremysteries, beginning with the sudden demise of his twin sister Clare, a champion jockey. The story mixes the complex activities of the TV crews doing flat and steeplechase race broadcasting with a darker background of blackmail--and eventually murder. l thought Francis did a much better job with the plotting and character development in this tale than in earlier works produced since Dick Francis' death. Not quite up to his father's best efforts, but improving. There was far less of the "had I but known," heavy-handed exposition that weakened previous books. The TV details were nice "color" and the supporting players better delineated -- people, not sketches. About halfway through, the pace picks up nicely, and revelations and events unfold at a clip that made this, if not a page turner, at least a fun read. The ending is classic Francis, a life-or-death struggle between protagonist and villain reminiscent of Dick's "good stuff."I am almost prepared to buy Francis' new book, featuring his father's most famous character, Sid Halley, jockey turned PI. My deepest fear is that Francis junior will not deliver the goods. But after *Bloodline*, I may just have to take the leap. less

Felix's main characters are more human than his father's.
