review 1: This is the first Felix Francis's solo work I have read, and though he shows potential to match his father, he is not there yet. The plot was interesting and suspenseful enough to make me finish the book in a day, but the reveal of the villain was entirely inadequate, with barely a hint earlier in the book to tie him into the story at all. The characters were diverse and individual, but not drawn deeply enough to truly care about them. For those who love Dick Francis for the horses and for explorations of other professions, though, Felix is his equal in those departments.
review 2: I wanted so much to like this book because I really was a fan of Dick Francis's books. It's hard to say what exactly is missing in Felix Francis's novels but they just aren't the
... more same. Yes, it's the horse racing world. Yes, it's got an appealing 'everyman' hero who is a decent fellow who brings both detective abilities and physical fortitude to solving the mystery. Yes, it has lots of interesting information about a world I know little about. But somehow I found myself being bored. There were too many irrelevant details that didn't add to the story. There were superficial characters who never became real. And although the hero told us about the grief and anguish he was experiencing, I never felt it. Even his physical pain seemed trivial, although I've had a broken rib and know that just breathing is agony. less

3.5 - Much better than the last one but not as good as the originals, but reasonably entertaining.
