review 1: REFUSAL is the latest in the “Francis” line of mysteries and it is a good one. Following in his father’s well-placed footsteps, Felix Francis has begun to write with a clarity and ambition in keeping with father Dick’s own history of thrilling stories. Is there or has there ever been a racing event in England that wasn’t tainted by the thought of a fix thrown into the mix of horses, trainers, jockeys, owners, bookies and punters, not to mention outside influences that wish to shade the outcomes for their own nefarious purposes. Thankfully for the Francis father and son, it would appear no, there hasn’t been any such thing. So when Sid Halley (an old friend of frequent readers of this line) is approached to look into a set of races that appear aboveboard, he... more does what the lead character of this type of story is supposed to do. He refuses. Then the man who brought him the allegations turns up dead, so Sid has to change his mind, right. Still a refusal. But when what appears to be a strong-arming Irish odds maker abducts Sid’s daughter just to make sure Sid won’t take on the case… well now Sid has to refuse the gentleman’s kind offer of laying off and attacks the problem head on. To say more would be to take away some of the fun inherent in a Francis novel. I can only say you will not be disappointed. A fun and exciting further look into the realm of horse racing brought to me through Goodreads.
review 2: Refusal features one of Dick Francis's regular characters Sid Halley. Sid has long since retired from riding and investigating when this story takes place, yet a friend in the racing offices wants him to look into some suspicious races. Sid tries to resist, but all of a sudden his friend turns up dead and a man is threatening Sid to say the races are not being fixed or else. Of course this gets Sid's attention and he begins investigating in earnest as to what exactly is going on, putting his family and himself in danger in the process.I found this story to be very true to classic Dick Francis novels even though it was written by his son Felix. Its a mystery revolving around the racetrack, the main character finds himself in danger, and there is a fair amount of suspense and tension as the story progresses. It was nothing spectacular or novel but an enjoyable read nonetheless.Note: I received this book for free through Goodreads first read program. less

More thriller than mystery, and too long at that.
