review 1: This book sort of terrified me. Right from the first page the author created an sinister atmosphere. I was on edge through the entire book, just waiting, waiting for something horrific to happen. It was scary in a subtle way that I haven't encountered in a book before. Very little actually happens, and yet everything happens. A whole life happens. And we see the protagonist as an old woman who can no longer trust her mind to show her reality in a clear way. The mind slips, the body goes, and one becomes vulnerable. This book is about the vulnerability of the old and the strange unravelling of things at the end of life. A unique book that left me feeling a bit violated and nervous.
review 2: An unsettling and insightful book looking at aging, trust, relationship
... mores, memory. The main character ruth has reached a frail time if her life and Fiona Macfarlane captures the vulnerability stubbornness and desire for independence of her main character. A telling look at the vulnerability of this aging lady, and a suspenseful tale looking at her fate. An engrossing read, with lots of issues to discuss. less

I went it for the cover, I left hurt, depressed and soft-hearted. All in a (possible) good way.
