review 1: Have I taken crazy pills? Why is everyone so in love with this vastly inferior sequel? If you read Map of Time and do not see the ending a mile away, you're not paying attention. I kept hoping that the book would turn away from it's obvious resolution but it did not. I truly like the way the author writes but it seems that he doesn't feel satisfying resolution is necessity. It must be me. I have no intention of finishing this trilogy.
review 2: Not really sure what to say about this book... Like the first, it was told in parts with different parts following different people, and seemingly disparate threads ultimately coming together - though the threads were a bit more straightforward in this one, if I recall correctly. Also like the first, some of the parts we
... morere interesting and others were long and overly rambling and boring. Unlike the first, though, I felt there were more boring parts than not in this one, and the pay-off just lacked punch. It felt kind of hokey, to be honest - epsecially the whole "but it's really about the super love story" schtick at the end.Anyway - I sort of feel like I should go into the different parts, the references to Poe and how I liked that Wells was a bigger part of this story, though I wasn't entirely thrilled to see Gilliam again, and I started to get annoyed that they were being so coy about Shackleton. The prologue was good, and pulled me in, initially.Part 1 started well, but went on too long, though it was interesting to see it revisited at the end. (Of course, since I read this book so slowly and sporadically, I had to sort of go back and refresh myself on some of the particulars by the time I got around to it.)Part 2 was one of those things that was ok while I was reading it, but I never felt any real compulsion to pick it back up. I went for stretches where I kind of forgot I was even reading it, except when I saw it on my 'currently-reading' widget on my home page.Part 3 was the worst. Charles' whole story was way too long and boring. The ending with Wells could've been decent, except for the pages of philosophical waffle which, again, could be interesting - what is the nature of time and space and fate, etc - except it ended up being very repetitive and circular and I was like, "Just freaking get to the end already!".So, yeah... I didn't love the first book - rated it 3 stars - but I was interested enough to continue. After this one, though, I'm not really sure how I feel about finishing out the trilogy. Blech. less
