review 1: I gave this book five stars because it was exceedingly hilarious, a good and relevant plot that fits our age, and an adorable leading guy. The romance is a bit iffy and dull, especially since it only began halfway in the novel, but it wasn't totally about him getting the girl; it was about him, and every other pale nerd by assosiation, accepting himself. The only problem I had with this book isn't really a big deal, yet I think it should be said: the emphasis on Catholicism. I'm as open minded as the next agnostic person, but it seemed that this book couldn't go a chapter without mentioning the Catholic religion. Again, I'm not necessarily complaining here, because I understand that it was part of the plot, but it was a bit too much, made me uncomfortable at times, and got... more irritating. Also, there were some character inconsistencies. The fact that he both liked chick flicks/Shakespeare, and also a huge rap fan? It just didn't fit, and the author didn't do anything with it; if you're going to throw random info out there, at least make it be consistent. These issues of mine are REALLY minor, however, so overall, this is definitely a book everyone should read, especially if you either want to date a vampire, or look like one!
review 2: It pains me that I have to give this book only 3 stars. I really wanted to like it more than I did, but unfortunately it just never clicked. That's not to say I didn't LIKE this novel - I was especially fond of Finbar and Luke and their relationship with each other, but a lot of the other characters fell flat. The plot itself was interesting but moved too slowly to hold my interest for more than short intervals at a time, and the whole idea of a group of high school sophomores honestly believing their classmate was a vampire seemed too far-fetched. Still, there was a lot of humor laced throughout Finbar's first person narration and, having grown up in the same area as Flynn and attending one of the high schools name dropped as a place some of Luke's admirers attended (and having known some Fordham Prep boys myself), I appreciated and enjoyed the overall familiarity of the setting as well as the overabundance of Catholic humor. All in all, I think Flynn shows great promise as an author once she finds her niche in terms of style. less
