review 1: 3.5 stars, rounded up.Completely unique world building, wonderful and diverse characters, and achingly beautiful turn of phrase- all high points.I deducted 1.5 stars because it just took me so long to get hooked. There was nothing wrong with the first half of the book, but it was pretty close to the 40-50% mark that I felt drawn to pick it back up and read, compelled to sink into it again. But I was drawn to it the deeper in I got and I was very content with how everything ended. Hardinge has a real way with words and the beings and places of her imagination are really wonderful. So much whimsy in the world building- delightful.
review 2: I picked this book up on a whim and was not really expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised! This was an original st
... moreory with an engaging plot and a fleshed out heroine. The protagonist must untangle an island-wide conspiracy that could mean death for herself and her people. The author manages to write the details of her complex plot in a way that kept me guessing for the most most part and I read the book eagerly to find out what would happen next. less
