review 1: A conservative, evangelical overview of trinitarian theology. It was very helpful in places. Sanders reviews the (conservative) evangelical tradition and demonstrates all the variety of ways the doctrine of the trinity can enhance and is supported by the tradition. My only criticism - not enough Barth! But given Barth's reception in North American evangelicalism, particularly among conservatives, I'm not surprised. Nonetheless, a very good introduction.
review 2: Sanders aims to show how the Trinity is the gospel, and the gospel is thoroughly Trinitarian. Even more specifically the book is written to display how a tacit Trinitarianism is woven throughout evangelical tradition. What might seem strange about this thesis is that many new Christians might not know
... moremuch - if anything - about the Trinity. But that does not change the reality that when we swim in the waters of salvation we are swimming in the reality of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. While there is no theology exam necessary for our justification, sanctification, or glorification, it seems clear that understanding the Three-in-One God better allows us to enjoy and experience Him."The Deep Things of God" leans toward academic and certainly can't be read (well) in an afternoon sitting. It wasn't a breeze and I felt myself having to push through some chapters, so I've given it a 3/5. While the book didn't "grab me" in this sense, it was certainly worth a the extra effort in order to develop my understanding. Ultimately, I feel like Sanders delivers in his efforts to communicate the practical significance of the Trinity as well as its established roots in evangelical thought. A few favorite quotes:"We ought to take God so seriously we consider Him more interesting than ourselves. In fact, if we had a proper sense of proportion, we would think of the life of God as the liveliest of all lives." (77)"Christianity is nothing less than the life of God in the soul of man." (116)"This doctrine is a description - a kind of map - of God's life with us, and of our life in God." (235) less
