Commissaire Adamsberg
review 1: I find Fred Vargas (Frederique Audoin-Rougeau, French medieval historian and eukaryotic archeologist and three time winner of the CWA's International Dagger) a real treasure. Her character in this series, Commissaire Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg, I place in the company of Salvo Montalbano, John Rebus, Reg Wexford, and Andy Dalziel. With his own style of policing, he is a memorable creation. Vargas's work has the benefit of an excellent translator, Sian Reynolds. Reading this series is time well spent.
review 2: When we read mysteries, most of us read them for "whodunit". I do to. And I like Fred Vargas because she never disappoints - her story is always well tangled and exciting. But I LOVE Fred Vargas, because her novels are always more than just mysteries: they ar
... moree lively depictions of Paris and French countryside and their inhabitants. I like slow and strangely aloof Commissaire Adamsberg who is equally capable of demanding the lab work on the twine that tied the legs of a city pigeon (and almost killed it), and starting an investigation based on a crazy story of the Wild Hunt in Normandy brought to him by an old lady from a provincial town. I like this provincial folk Vargas describes so well – reserved, adamant and superstitious, but also generous and hospitable. I like Adamsberg’s at first glance dysfunctional team consisting of a narcoleptic, a compulsive eater, a female battering ram, an amateur ichthyologist, a sophisticated lover of white wine and French history, and a weisenheimer communicating with colleagues in Racine-like verse. They all seem quite eccentric, yet, very warm, caring and human. And this is what makes reading Fred Vargas’ novels so different and so attractive. I also like that many of her novels start like old legends. This one actually started like a fairy tale – with a path of bread crumbs… less

Is it the translation or are current French writers just a bit dull?
