review 1: While the serialized version of this comic garnered a lot of attention for featuring a young female Muslim teenager as a super-hero, that's not what makes this book special. What makes it special is the way that G. Willow Wilson and Alfredo Alphona have created a classic teen superhero origin story and comic for a mainstream comics company, and made it feel like a very individual, distinctive, and personal work. This isn't a team trying to recapture the feel of the early years of Spider-Man; this is a team telling a story about a young woman who feels like an outsider who suddenly finds herself on an unexpectedly heroic path, and telling it in a way only they could tell it. The fact that she feels like an outsider partly due to her religion is not just window dressing, but... more the comic doesn't call attention to it any more than early Spider-Man comics advocates everyone wearing glasses and sweaters and being a nerd. Kamala Khan is an American teenager from Jersey City whose skin is brown and who is Pakistani and who is Muslim and who has superpowers. And all of that, including the superpowers, feels down to earth and real. Kamala reacts to things like a real person, and is motivated by very real motivations. The art also does not look like the stereotyped ultra-slick superhero comic art. It also feels very down to earth and real. And that's why this comic, about a Pakistani Muslim girl superhero, has found an audience, I think: it's not because of the individual characteristics that first get your attention, but just because it's a really good comic.
review 2: AWESOME!!! This is refreshing and I'm pleased I went out on a limb and acquired this. The art and colour complements the writing and dialogue and characters, it doesn't pander and above all it's fun whilst not being too shallow. These elements add up to create a great read but I think Kamala Kahn is an exciting protagonist whose monologue carries the book well throughout. Excited to read what happens next! less
