review 1: The two other Zevin books were on the light side, playful and entertaining. This one is altogether more dense and rewarding, if more traditionally structured. A serious, GOOD novel. Feels like life in these United States in recent years. Publishers Weekly called it "The Corrections for our recessionary times" and it was indeed that. In fact, it was better than The Corrections, which was too long and not as well edited. I also very much appreciated how she took on southern Christian characters in a way that worked, I thought. It's not a segment of the American demographic that makes it into fiction very often, in my experience - at least in a way respectful of their humanity, not as caricatures. Good read!!
review 2: This book was witty and even though it dealt
... more with difficult subjects (finances and family), it was clever and biting. The Pomeroy family are in a downward spiral, obtaining lots of debt to pay for one daughter's wedding and to finance the father's return to college. Bad choices are made, which severs the family and wreaks havoc on their children. I found it highly readable and refreshing, especially as Britney Spears is used as a theme throughout the novel. less

I enjoyed this book, though if you are looking for likeable characters, go somewhere else.

Good book. A bit depressing, but well written.

Dysfunctional family fiction at its finest.
