review 1: Had enjoyed Collected works of A J Fikry so gave this a try. Too much missing for the story to be much more than reminiscences of a simpering teen - no explanation of the reason for the shortages of water, lack of cars, why chocolate is illegal, nor an explanation why paper books are so distasteful, why other countries seem not to be living in the same deprived environment, etc. Stuck it out to the end as I kept thinking of Fikry.
review 2: I read the first book in the series and had a difficult time getting into it till halfway through. However, I am so glad that I took a chance to read the sequel. It was fantastic. I enjoyed seeing Anya change as a character and really enjoyed that this book focused on responsibility, identity, and picking up the pieces
... morewhen things do not go your way. I could definitely see how this book could turn in to a whole love story, but in the end it decided to go above and beyond that cliche theme. Anya cared more about being an independent and strong woman, than being someone's girlfriend. I would recommend this book to another person! less

Sounds vampire-y, but it's not. A little fantasy mixed with a little YA. Intense and angst-ridden.
