review 1: This is the true coming-of-age tale in the trilogy. Anya sets in motion the nightclub idea that she had in the end of book two. An integral part of her plan is a partnership with Charles Delacroix, and Win doesn’t like that one bit. So he demands that she chooses between him and her nightclub. This volume lacks the action and conspiracy of the second and feels like an extended denouement. The quick pace of the second volume is replaced with an emotional depth and emerging maturity in Anya. She navigates the business world and family politics while figuring out what is worth valuing in a relationship. She never has an easy decision, but she learns from each one.In wrapping up the various storylines, a few conflicts are thrown into the mix, but overall, this book la... morecks urgency. Most conflicts are wrapped up quickly and mess-free before moving on to the next one. The volume has an overly-tidy, predictable resolution, as well.Anya remains a consistent character as she ages into an adult. She proves her ability to make tough and unselfish choices based on logic and her best information. She remains a daddy’s girl and, as much as she wants to pretend that she’s thoroughly hardened emotionally, she always maintains the soft spot in her heart. She struggles with her spirituality, which I found an interesting touch, even though it's basically a rite-of-passage for young 20-somethings. But Anya, I have to tell you. Things that existed 80 years ago are not "ancient." They're not even antiques yet. • Mild language• Sex is implied• A violent attack• Social drinking, no drugs
review 2: This was the somewhat predictable ending to the Birthright trilogy. I read the print versions of the first two installments, and listened to the audiobook of this final book. The narrator's voice was not what I expected Anya's voice to sound like, and I found the dialogue was stilted at times. Anya focuses much of her attention in the first two-thirds of the book on her business venture, her cacao nightclub in New York City. Her hard work and determination is rewarded when her nightclub is wildly popular, and soon thoughts of expansion and franchises are acted upon. Story lines for minor characters are neatly brought to conclusion throughout the book, perhaps a bit too conveniently in some cases? As for Anya and Wynn, they seem determined to go their separate ways, but when an unexpected tragedy befalls Anya, Wynn is there, but will their love for each other be enough? less
