review 1: I really enjoyed this story. I friend recommended it and I assumed it would be excellent. When I first started reading, I didn't really like the main (and title) character. I have a terrible time reading books with unlikable characters and so I sort of lost my zeal. However, I trust my friend's suggestions, so I kept reading. I'm glad that I did. The story takes a sort of Silas Marner type twist and turns into something quite lovable. It turns out that A.J. Fikry is extremely likable and there are enough quirky twists and turns to keep the reader going. Aside from a seemingly slow start and a few average attempts at character development through overly obvious description, I found the book delightful and definitely worth reading.
review 2: Admittedly there are
... moresome crazy things that happen in this book that make it a bit unbelievable, but those are the same elements that make it magical and endearing. Here's the thing: if you love books you've got to read this one, because it's about the life of an unforgettable, remarkable bookseller who learns to live his life again after losing his wife. I wish I knew someone just like him. less
