review 1: My first experience with Ms. Foley's work--I'm cautiously optimistic about reading another one of her books. This one however, wasn't spectacular. Despite interesting lead characters with romantic and sexual chemistry, the narrative is bogged down with extensive plot exposition that seemed a bit nebulous and hokey (a mysterious "Order" and "Seeker" and "Promethian" society that I found confusing and unbelievable in the context of an early 19th century setting). The leads also fell in love very quickly and for two people with many doubts/hangups, right away became comfortable using endearments almost ad naseum.
review 2: Foley is an author that is new to me. I really enjoyed the first half of the book because Miss Starling a sweet and charitable young woman wit... moreh modern ideas is likeable. Her situation with a step mother, pressure to wed and kindness endear her to the reader initially. The hero Max has just returned after the war completing secret missions in his role as rich, powerful, hedonist. Questioning his life and decisions, he decides he is ready to marry and uses a dossier of the top 5 ladies of marriageable age. Spying on her from a brothel he sees her devotion to orphans and bravery. Max is smitten but trying to get her to agree is a task. The second half of the book details the beginnings of the inferno Club and it read a bit like a Biblical/mythical/historical/Raiders of the lost ARcish drama. While trying to establish the raison'd etre and a future for more books the flow of the first half was halted. I will continue the series and reassess. less
