review 1: Meh. Helen, the main character, was a precocious and unlikable main character. In many ways she was older than her age, but her self-centeredness was age appropriate. The book does explore guilt, and makes mention of a grown-up Helen still trying to come to terms with the events of that summer. It's written like an autobiography, as though a grown-up Helen wants to put herself on trial. If she lays out the events of the summer, if she's honest and tells the entire truth about herself and her character, would you, the reader, implicate her? Is she guilty? Well. It's worth reading. The characters are realistic and vividly drawn. Godwin is very good at creating real and flawed people. I believed all of them.

... morehelf end caps at my local library. While word /page wise this was a quick read, the depth achieved within will resonate long after I've returned it to be read by another. Many aspects of Helens upbringing, persona, and evolving perspective touched me deeply (as seen in myself and others). Thankfully, there are more books to look for from Ms Godwin. And she is a native of Birmingham. :) less
