review 1: Interesting, maybe even intriguing: interwoven lives of students, "old" families, and nun teachers at a boarding school near a fictional Asheville, NC, tracing their lives from the founding of the school by an Irish immigrant through the troubling memories of its fierce headmistress, in declining old age. So, what's not to like? Some redundancies, which maybe can't be avoided when you're exploring the same events from different perspectives. Some Overwrought bits--but, too, the point is the sort of "Black Narcissus" (movie, 1947) quality of the milieu. The denouement, two old friends reflecting on their experiences since their girlhood, was too much narrative, as if Volume 2 of the saga had been condensed to Cliff Notes. I did like the nuns pondering their faith vs. the... moreir humanity, and the portrayals of longstanding loyalties and feuds.
review 2: I found myself sucked into this book, even though the story/plot are somewhat disappointing. I'll first put out my grievance about the final chapters where the author follows up on where the girls that are central to this story wound up, who they were as adults...it just didn't flow well with the rest of the story. The book is entirely dedicated to a very specific time in the history of these characters lives, and then in the last 30 or so pages the past 50 years of their lives are summarized for us. Other than that, it is an interesting read. The plot centers on an "event" that there is a lot of build up for, but the actual happening itself is something that, when it occurs, doesn't feel like it has the impact on the characters lives that the entirety of the book leads you to believe. That being said, the build up is well done, and the author's writing is engaging. She does have away of painting an image and putting you in the minds of the characters without it feeling contrived. Overall, an interesting read, but not my favorite. less

I liked it in the middle, and then the end felt flat and dragged out. Great characters.

I found this one hard to follow. Also some unanswered questions when I finished.
