review 1: I haven't come across many feel-good novels about post-genocide Rwanda, but this is one of them. The main character, Angel, is the wise and witty grandmother figure that everyone wishes they had in their lives. She runs a cake-baking business and lives in an apartment complex amongst people from all over the world whose jobs have brought them to Rwanda during this period of unity and reconciliation. While raising her five grandchildren and running a business, Angel still finds time to make a positive impact on her small corner of the world. She approaches difficult situations in a matter of fact way and with a clarity and kindness that make her an irresistible figure. This novel covers a lot of difficult topics like genocide, HIV/AIDS, FGM, and poverty, but still manages t... moreo bring a lightheartedness that showcases some of the positive moments that arise in everyday life.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book, the story revolves around Angel Tungaraza, who bakes cakes and through doing this meets many fascinating characters who tell her their stories over a cup of tea, while filling out their order forms. It takes place in Kigali Rwanda but the people are from not only Rwanda but different countries. The book gives us an interesting way of learning about various issues Africa has to deal with and also issues Angel herself has had to come to terms with. less
