review 1: Gale Stanley comes out strong with her debut novel, Call of the Wilds. Now with the next two books in the Black Wolf Gorge series released, the reader gets a strong introduction to her shifter culture and is drawn into the series. I was immediately taken into the world Stanley creates and never considered not reading the entire series. In Call of the Wilds, veterinarian Karin Stone escapes the city for quiet Pennsylvania life when she gets a job as the wildlife manager caring for a pack of relocated wolves that have been declared endangered. Little does she know that her pack isn't the only endangered species in Black Wolf Gorge. When a mutilated hiker is discovered and a wild black wolf is captured, Karin is the only protection the wolves have as the town rallies around d... moreestroying all wolves.Malcolm is the only person that comes to Karin’s aid. He isn’t like the other men in the area with their hatred for the wolves. Little does she know that this man is much like the wolves she protects. She falls hard for Malcolm, the sexy outcast she knows little about, but after she gives into her desire for him and they become intimate, he walks away. Karin tries to move on, concentrating on defending her wolves while fighting off the advances of the sheriff. She refuses to fight for a man who doesn’t return her feelings despite a revelation that will change her life forever. Karin’s strength in always taking control over her life despite any obstacle she encounters defines her as a strong heroine.Her strength is put to the test when Sable, a jealous she-wolf, comes to Black Wolf Gorge. Sable attempts to mate with Malcolm and becomes jealous of the feelings she can sense Malcolm has for Karin. The tension and the sensuality soar as the conflict rises. Sable is merciless in her attempts to create a bond with Malcolm and remove Karin from the picture in search of her own happily-ever-after. She is the villain every reader will love to hate, a well-crafted character that brings out anger in the reader and compels a sense of allegiance to Karin. The reader will fly through the second half of the book desperately needing to know how the characters will find a happily-ever-after. It is easy for the reader to become connected to the hero and heroine because of the realistically written dialogue, the depth of the characters and the back stories that Stanley takes the time to weave into the book. Call of the Wilds is a solid shifter book with a strongly developed plot and unique storyline. Read it but then be prepared to want to read the others in the Black Wolf Gorge series by this fairly new author. I suspect you won’t be disappointed.
