review 1: I would give this WONDERFUL FOOK 10 STARS. It broke my heard and mended my heart and it will always be one of my most favorite books of all time.Fletcher Carson volunteers for Viet Nam service. {You will find out why once you read the book.}Once in Viet Nam, Fletcher finds a dog, a yellow lab, which he names JACK. Man and dog become "one," with JACK finding trip wires and saving the lives of THE FAT LADY PLATOON.I won't spoil the heart breaking story for you; but rest assured this story is a WINNER!
review 2: Joy McLean, owner of Café Books in Canmore, pressed this into my hands as one of her favourite books. And then I found out it was a Griffin title! If you are a dog lover and a lover of fiction featuring dogs (A Dog’s Purpose, The Art of Racing in the
... more Rain etc.) you will like this book. There is also quite a bit of military description of being a soldier in Vietnam as Fletcher Carson enlists during the last year of the war in order to escape the pain of losing his wife and daughter in a car accident. He doesn’t care if he lives or dies – in fact he hopes to die until he finds an injured yellow lab who needs his help. The love and redemption that Jack, the dog, brings to Fletcher is the heart of the book. The story line is partially based on the actual existence and abandonment of canine units in Vietnam. less
