review 1: Reading this really wrecked me, at least the first three quarters or so, where Haugen shares some horrific stories of injustice. In the developed world, our justice system might be flawed, and still there is great inequality -- but in other parts of the world, the justice system acts as a full blown agent of the "bad guys". Corruption flourishes and the rich are impervious to ramifications of any heinous acts committed. A great deal of effort by the developed world is expended in anti-poverty campaigns, but these are just misguided ineffective window dressing attempts unless the larger issue of justice is addressed, according to Haugen.Haugen concludes the book by explaining that even in developed regions of the world, our justice system were once broken in the same ways, ... morebut that we've remedied the major ills as our system of governance progressed into the modern age. And he gives some success stories of modern day turnabouts in the developed world.
review 2: Poverty requires the end of violence. This book, more than any other, has affected my life in such a way to draw my attention to everything I have taken for granted. I am ever grateful for my safety. While The Locust Effect was difficult to read in terms of learning about the horrific atrocities that happen daily in places of the world, it educated me to ways I can make a small difference. Thank God for IJM, International Justice Mission, and their efforts to protect the poor by bringing justice to their oppressors. The accounts of changed villages, families and individuals is encouraging. The conclusion is especially my favorite.I encourage everyone to make an effort to read this book and take a sober look how crime and violence robs even hopeful expectation of escaping poverty's clinch. less

Important discussion on violence and legal reform, topics that are generally overlooked.

It's hard to read, it's powerful, sad, difficult to swallow but an absolute must read.
