review 1: This story is a take on the classic Around the World In Eighty Days. The main character, Hari Fogg is trying to do what his famous dad Phineas did years earlier by driving a motor car (very new during his time) around the world as his father did with a hot-air balloon. I enjoyed the story, but I don't know if middle-school students will. The characters are older than the intended reading age and most students will not know the original story. There is a lot of action and the background story is highlighted as the plot goes along.
review 2: Although an audience for this book might be hard to pinpoint, it is a fairly exciting adventure story that continues the story of Phileas Fogg and his adventures. This time, it's the year 1891, and his son, Harry, unwise
... morely accepts a bet that he can travel around the world in his handbuilt motorcar in 100 days. Traveling with Harry will be his mechanical genius friend, Johnny, and a couple of unexpected companions. The wager is a nail-biter to the finish and Blackwood's excellent writing propels the story along smoothly. Probably best for junior high and up because of the length, and the content may not interest younger kids. less
