review 1: Author Gene Kerrigan was bestowed with the 2012 Gold Dagger (award) for Best Crime Novel of the Year. This is generally where I start with unfamiliar authors - select from the award winners on the designated shelves at QRB. As the Kirkus review noted "Kerrigan writes ripping crime tales, impressive in scope and crackling with energy, as well as a fascinating portrait of contemporary Ireland." A noir thriller, the story is complex with rich multiple layers and morally conflicted characters, rendered with clear and solid writing. Savored every minute of it.
review 2: Loved this. Finished in two sittings. Written in clean, sparse prose, Kerrigan unveils the dark underbelly of Dublin and of Ireland itself -- "This country, we're great at looking back at things
... more. Something awkward happens, we run away from it. And when the smell won't go away...we have an inquiry, or a tribunal, and we write a report that no one reads and that's it. We're great at looking back." I hope Kerrigan continues to write novels featuring the beautifully flawed DS Bob Tidey. less
